After nearly a week of heavy rains, Cyclone Roanu ravaged many parts of Sri Lanka, causing floods and landslides that have left thousands displaced. To help rebuild lives following this disaster, Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka will construct permanent homes for families whose houses were destroyed.

On average, females are disproportionately impacted by inadequate housing and unhygienic sanitation facilities. Those who do not have access to permanent and safe shelter are at a higher risk of being subject to physical abuse, mental distress and other physical and psychological health conditions. Inadequate access to safe, hygienic and private sanitation facilities causes physical discomfort and a sense of shame in women and young girls, who are forced to use these facilities early morning or late at night to maintain privacy, exposing them to the risk of assault. This International Women's Day, we seek to launch our new campaign that will focus on building women up and investing in housing and sanitation facilities for the women and young girls we work with.             Read More...
