Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka is a registered non-governmental organization whose mission is to provide simple, decent, affordable housing to people in need. To receive assistance from a local affiliate project, a family must live in unfit or inadequate housing and must not be able to afford or obtain better housing through conventional means. Partner families are selected based on their ability to contribute labour and repay the cost of the house. Religion, Ethnicity, Political status Kinship and Friendship do not determine a family's eligibility.

Disaster Response

Habitat’s response to the flood situation in Sri Lanka has been successful with its completion of the first phase and is well on its way to the second. Habitat Sri Lanka was able to assist families with the provision of house cleaning materials and with temporary shelters.

Building Cost Effective Houses

Cost effective homes are built with the use of the Building Training Centres (BTC). At the BTC, beneficiaries are trained to make their own soil bricks, concrete columns, door / window frames and the construction of their house etc.

The "sweat equity" of the beneficiary helps minimise the cost of the materials and the training received will make them acquire new skills for a better livelihood.
