SUMMARY OF HIGHLIGHTS/ACHIEVEMENTS OF
DISASTER RESPONSE PROGRAM 2007

  • Thirty houses in the Nick Jayanetti Village were dedicated in February 2007 for families affected by the tsunami. The houses in Bambarenda village, Dikwella town in Galle, were built with funds raised by a Sri Lanka-born, US-based bank executive and friends.
  • In March 50 houses for families affected by the tsunami in Galle and built on Government land at Walahanduwa were dedicated. These houses were funded by Coca Cola, GaP and Ford.
  • SHO Netherlands funded 319 tsunami houses completed in May. The projects were carried out in Galle, Trincomalee & Batticaloa.
  • In July, Habitat reached the milestone for the 2,000th house built for tsunami-affected family in Samagiwatte village, Dangedera town, in the southern Galle district.
  • In August 77 houses funded by Irish Aid were completed and handed over to both tsunami survivors and war IDP families in Trincomalee.
  • On Citigroup’s Global Community Day in November, 60 volunteers from the  Sri Lanka bank helped in construction work for two houses in the southern town of Minnerithenna Estate, Kalutara. The volunteer staff also helped to turf an area of 15 perches at the housing site which will be later used as a children’s’ playground.
  • 77 houses funded by Y Grow were dedicated in Batticaloa.
  • In November TearFund UK Dedicated 20 Houses to Tsunami survivors of Lansiyawatta, Moratuwa. In addition to providing houses TearFund also funded water, sanitation, electricity and greening for the home owners.
  • 732 houses built up to November and a further 350 houses to be completed by December, ending the year with 1082 houses.
