2000th House Built by Habitat's Disaster Response Program

Habitat for Humanity handed over its 2000th house to Mr Mohamed Bishul Hafi and his family at Samagiwatte, Dangedera, Galle on Friday 6th July 2007. When the tsunami destroyed nearly two thirds of Sri Lanka’s coastline on that fateful day in December 2004, the challenge before us was enormous. Habitat commenced its Disaster Response Program in February 2005 in the areas worst affected by the tsunami, in Batticaloa, Amparai, Trincomalee and Galle.

Nearly two and a half years after the tsunami, we have served 975 families in Batticaloa, 330 families in Trincomalee, 632 families in Galle and 64 families in Colombo. Approximately 9000 people have benefited from our shelter program up to now. The majority of houses built by Habitat (84%) were on the beneficiaries’ own land and (16%) of the houses were built on government owned land.
