TEAR FUND UK DEDICATES 20 HOUSES TO TSUNAMI SURVIVORS OF LANSIYAWATTE, MORATUWA On Friday 30th November, 2007 Tear Fund UK dedicated 20 houses to tsunami survivors of Lansiyawatte, Moratuwa. Ms Clare Crawford from UK officially handed over the keys to the beneficiaries at a simple dedication function. The people at Lansiyawatte were badly affected by the tsunami and lived in deplorable make shift shacks even two years after the Asian tsunami. Fresh hopes arose when Habitat and Tear Fund promised them decent permanent homes and began construction work in August 2007. Home owners provided maximum sweat equity as they actively participated in preparation of foundations, mixing of cement, carrying water, sand etc and helping with minor labour work to expedite the construction progress. Each home owner maintained a list of all materials they received thereby having a quality check at home owner level. They were also involved in identifying what adaptations they wanted to suit their land and requirements. The houses were of 300 sq ft which consisted of a lounge, two rooms, kitchen and an attached toilet. The second phase of this project would provide the Lansiyawatte home owners with electricity, water, drainage, garbage disposal and also greening home gardens. Tear Fund UK is funding three other projects with HFHSL which also provides environmental elements in addition to permanent housing. These projects too are for tsunami and war IDP survivors in Battiacaloa, Ampara, Trincomalee, Kalutara & Colombo. Tear Fund is a Christian relief and development charity dedicated to transforming the lives of millions of the world’s poorest people in a positive and sustainable way, regardless of race, gender or religion.
