Our Dream Becomes A Reality D.M Indrani & her family live in a remote hamlet in Buttala, Monaragala. For thirteen years D.M Indrani, her husband, son & daughter’s one dream was to own a permanent home. Indrani’s husband works at the Sugar Corporation located in the same town. With his meager income they could only build a small mud hut for themselves, which only consisted of one room. There was no place for the children to sleep or study and they lived in a very cramped condition. As they had no space to entertain guests, they found their close relations and friends disassociating them. The family led a tearful life as a permanent house was so far away from reality. With much difficulty Indrani saved a little money through cultivation, just enough to put up a small foundation as a first step to building a permanent home. However, at this stage they were short of finances to continue with the rest of the construction. Without proper knowledge & guidance they had wasted much money on the foundation. For one and a half years Indrani and her husband struggled to find finances to complete the house they had begun. Around this time Habitat For Humanity was introduced to her village. Habitat helped them to focus and aim at their goal of building a house through a daily saving scheme and also introduced them to work in a small cluster groups. The happiness in Indrani’s heart could not be explained as she watched her house come up brick by brick. She is happy that her husband and even her children helped and participated in the construction. The house was completed in no time due to the cooperation and guidance by Habitat and the family’s own commitment. Habitat stood behind Indrani’s family like a shadow and brought a sense of camaraderie to the whole village as they gathered to build Indrani’s house and make her dream a reality. When she looks back she finds it hard to believe that with a very small saving of Rs 16/50 (USD cents 16) her family was able to own a decent permanent home. Her children now have their own space to sleep and study and even her friends and relations have once again accepted their family and associate with them. Indrani is thankful to Habitat for all the guidance and encouragement given to her family and for making her dream come true. |
