World Habitat Day 2010 PDF Print E-mail

The world commemorates World Habitat Day every first Monday of October, an initiative launched by the United Nations in 1986. This year too, celebrations were held worldwide to create awareness, show solidarity and also bring to light the need for immediate action to be taken to ensure those less fortunate have a secure and healthy place to call ‘home’. Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka joined in the worldwide celebrations by hosting many events that took place throughout the country. The theme of this year’s celebrations was ‘Hard Hats for Habitat’ to focus on the importance of safety in construction.

Bare your Sole 2010

On the 4th October 2010, a barefoot walk was organized by Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka and STITCH movement, a youth organisation that works on issues that affect youth around the country. The walk was staged around the popular Viharamaha Devi Park Colombo, and began at the Green Path end.. Posters and slogans were held by those involved with slogans like ‘A home or a box – its your choice’ and ‘Kindness Builds’. Even with the threat of rain, many attended the walk, and it caused quite a stir in the capital as it was held in rush hour traffic!

HSBC Staff Volunteer Build

On the 2nd October 2010, Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka, along with volunteers from HSBC’s Corporate Banking Section, YWCA (Moratuwa), Lyceum international School and Alethea International School assisted in the construction of 8 houses in the outskirts of Milleniya, Bandaragama. They were joined by villagers from the area, willing to work together to build houses for their neighbors. Although work was interrupted by heavy rains, the teams managed to place roofs on most houses, redistribute material to one focal point and also sift sand in preparation needed to plaster the houses. The commitment shown by all involved was truly inspiring, and they promised to return once the rainy days were over to continue work with the houses!
