About the Program

Throughout the history of mankind, humans first instinct has been to create a comfortable abode for themselves and their families. This basic need is no less prevalent in Sri Lanka, but alas far too many people do not have the ability to achieve this for a whole array of reasons.

Too many people on this beautiful island live in sub standard accommodation. Structures that look nothing more than derelict remnants to the western eye, house families of ten. Running water, electricity, drainage and ventilation are a distant dream for these poor people.

People crammed into a building made of sheets and a ramshackle collection of plastics and asbestos, huddling around a dismal cooker, clogging the air with thick smoke, trying to bring their children up to believe in a better tomorrow. It is hard to believe in this when your clothes are sodden from rain pouring in through a roof littered with holes. When the stench of human excrement overpowers the faint aroma of boiled rice, while children attempt to do their studies by the faltering light of a fast fading candle.

40% of Sri Lankans live in a ‘house’ no bigger than a garage. Generations crammed together in one-room structures with no privacy or intimacy, a young child having to watch their elderly grand mother slowly die as they lie like sardines, awaiting daylight so they can be released from this living embodiment of hell.

Sponsor a Home gives people of all faiths and domination's from around the globe with compassion and a desire to make Sri Lanka a better place the chance to do so. In a country so blessed with wondrous natural beauty, it is a gross injustice that so many people live like this.YOU can make a real difference.

How the Program Works

The world is made up of people, rich and poor, who are united by wanting to help others less fortunate than themselves. That is why at Habitat we have made it possible for anyone to contribute. What may seem like a token gesture in the developed world can have a huge effect in a developing nation such as Sri Lanka. At the other end of the scale we have the infrastructure to accommodate long lasting and mutually beneficial relationships with corporate partners.

The options available are:

  • Sponsor a home

  • Sponsor a project

  • Sponsor a component

  • A one off donation

  • A monthly donation

We have a dedicated team of friendly and knowledgeable sponsorship coordinators who can answer all your questions and advise you on how you can best make a contribution.

What you should know about HFHSL and Sponsoring a Home

  • HFHSL works in partnership with families, building with and for them via affordable, non-profit, inflation-adjusted loans.

  • Monthly payments from existing home owners go into HFHSL’s revolving fund which is used in turn, to build more homes.

  • Families invest their own labour (sweat equity) into building the houses of fellow community members.

  • Prospective beneficiaries are selected based on non-discriminatory set of criteria, which ensures that assistance is given to the most neediest families.

  • Building costs are kept low by using locally sourced and Building Training Centre (BTC) manufactured materials as well as volunteer labor.

  • Incremental housing is encouraged, starting with a simple ‘core’ house that meets all the basic necessities.

  • Families continue to partner with HFHSL to improve on their home, as and when they are ready.
